Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Rushville, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Rushville which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
