Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Shepardsville, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Shepardsville which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
