Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - South Whitley, IN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in South Whitley which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
