There are substance abuse programs available in or near St. John which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
