Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - St. Mary Of The Woods, IN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in St. Mary Of The Woods which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
