Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Troy, IN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Troy that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
