Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Wawaka, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Wawaka which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
