Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Whiting, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Whiting that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
