Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Courtland, KS.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Courtland that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
