Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Douglass, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Douglass that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
