Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Emporia, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Emporia that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
