Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Garfield, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Garfield which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
