The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Gas are programs which are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of accreditation that was granted.
