The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Kansas City are programs which are officially allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid rehab facility can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of certification it has been given.
