The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Lebanon are programs who are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
