The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Manhattan are programs which are legally permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch.
