The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Norway are programs who are legally permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get auxiliary services aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the kind of certification that was given.
