Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Baxter, KY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Baxter which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
