Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Coldstream, KY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Coldstream that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
