Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Flatwoods, KY.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Flatwoods which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
