Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Goose Rock, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Goose Rock which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
