Treatment clients referred from the court for drug or alcohol rehabilitation are usually referred because they are being granted a chance to receive rehabilitation rather than face jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent with first time offenders, it can be offered at any time including while the defendant is already incarcerated. There are different types of programs that offenders can be referred to, and it usually all depends on which programs are local to Grand Rivers and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.
There are treatment programs that work primarily with the courts to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are usually publicly-funded or are available at little or no cost to the client. Additionally, there are also private drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers that can be approved by the court if there is a specific type of rehab that the client requires or prefers that a state-funded program can't fulfill. The client's attorney can propose such options to the judge for acceptance. There are even drug and alcohol recovery programs that operate out of the jails themselves, in which case clients are sometimes in a better position for early release or other leniencies when enrolling in substance abuse treatment services while serving their time for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
