Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Grand Rivers, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Grand Rivers which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
