Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Harrodsburg, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Harrodsburg which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
