Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Highland Heights, KY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Highland Heights which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
