Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Jenkins, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Jenkins which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
