Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Lookout, KY.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lookout which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
