Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Owensboro, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Owensboro which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
