Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Pembroke, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Pembroke which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
