Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Rousseau, KY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Rousseau which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
