Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - St. Francis, KY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in St. Francis which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
