Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Stanley, KY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Stanley which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
