Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Union, KY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Union that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
