Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Vicco, KY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Vicco which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
