Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Williamstown, KY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Williamstown that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
