Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Akers, LA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Akers which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
