Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Amelia, LA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Amelia which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
