Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Belle Chasse, LA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Belle Chasse which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
