Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Converse, LA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Converse that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
