The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was granted.
