Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Dry Prong, LA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Dry Prong that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
