Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Echo, LA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Echo which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
