Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Gloster, LA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Gloster which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
