The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Drug prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Lena are programs which are officially permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary benefits in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been granted.
