Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Marion, LA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Marion that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
