Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Morrow, LA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Morrow that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
