Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Patterson, LA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Patterson that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
