The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Raceland are programs which are legally permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
