Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Saline, LA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Saline which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
