Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sulphur, LA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Sulphur that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
